In the fall of 2005, the large inner space of a New York City Chelsea district gallery is darkened; the tall floor-to-ceiling windows that face the street have been repeated in the
interior so that when I enter, I also have the impression of being about to leave, drawn to the exterior light that filters through these frosted panels but fails to fill the gallery space. Figures, silhouetted behind the haze, move in and out of the window frame giving me the impression of watching workers taking a cigarette break outside.
